Introduction Still a family-run business. When the Moody Group was sold, 3 members of the Moody family and the production manager bought the teak decking back from the new owners. The new company took all the employees from the previous company.
During the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, we encountered a number of early ‘off-boat’ produced decks made by other companies. The advantages of the off-boat method were obvious, however many of these early efforts were flawed. This was due to a combination of poor wood quality, poor design, lack of moisture control, poor or unsuitable backing materials, rebated seams and poor caulking which together resulted in the early failure of many of these decks.
In the mid 1990’s, we set out to develop a better quality, more reliable off-boat produced deck. The first decks, built using the Moody Deck method, were installed on Moody yachts by Marine Projects Ltd. The system proved a success, and soon other builders began to adopt Moody Deck to provide a quality deck at reasonable cost for production yachts. We subsequently modified the system to suit one-off applications.
In 2001 and 2002, demand for Moody Deck was such that we invested heavily in new plant and premises, in order to bring the Moody Deck quality to a wider customer base. By the middle of 2002, around 20,000 square metres of Moody Deck had been produced.
